Taxol is used to treat breast, ovarian, and lung cancer. It contains paclitaxel, which works to stop cancer cells from dividing by stabilizing a key component within the cell called microtubules, which paralyzes the cell and prevents it from dividing. Taxol is given intravenously under close medical supervision. This medication may cause some side effects, such as a decrease in white blood cells, hair loss, numbness in the extremities, and nausea. Skin allergies or liver problems may also occur. Therefore, blood tests and liver function tests must be monitored continuously during treatment. Taxol should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the doctor must be informed of any other medications being taken to avoid serious interactions and complications.
