DTIC is used to treat certain types of cancer, such as malignant melanoma and Hodgkin lymphoma. The drug works by affecting the genetic material within the cancer cell, preventing it from dividing and leading to its gradual death. This drug is given intravenously.
The patient requires close medical supervision due to the side effects it may cause, such as severe nausea, loss of appetite, and general fatigue. Blood cell counts must be monitored regularly during treatment, as DTIC may lead to a decrease in blood cell counts, which increases the risk of infection.
It may also cause changes in liver function, which must be checked periodically. This drug is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The doctor must be informed of all other medications being taken to avoid interactions and complications.
