Eloxatin is used to treat colorectal cancer, especially in advanced stages or after tumor removal. The drug contains oxaliplatin, which belongs to a class of chemotherapy drugs known as platinum compounds. It works by affecting the DNA within cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and leading to their death. This drug is given intravenously and is often used with other drugs, such as fluorouracil, to increase its effectiveness. Eloxatin may cause common side effects, such as numbness in the extremities, a sensation of coldness when touched, nausea, and general fatigue. Nerve and kidney function should be monitored during treatment. The doctor should also be informed of any other medications being used to avoid interactions.
Eloxatin is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and precautions should be taken to reduce associated complications.
