The triphosphate version then competes with natural deoxyguanosine triphosphate for incorporation into viral DNA. Once integrated, acyclovir triphosphate disrupts the DNA chain, preventing further viral replication and effectively halting the spread of the herpes simplex virus within the infected tissues.
