Zovirax skin is a medication that contains acyclovir as its active ingredient, functioning primarily as an antiviral agent. Upon application, acyclovir is selectively phosphorylated by viral thymidine kinase into acyclovir monophosphate. This compound is subsequently transformed into acyclovir triphosphate by cellular enzymes. The active triphosphate form interferes with viral DNA synthesis by competitively inhibiting viral DNA polymerase and incorporating itself into the viral DNA strand. This action effectively halts further replication of the herpes simplex virus, leading to a reduction in viral load and alleviation of symptoms associated with herpes infections.
