Carbimazole is a type of thionamide, a drug that undergoes rapid and almost complete metabolism to thiamazole, which is its active metabolite. It is believed that the mode of action of
carbimazole lies in inhibiting the oxidation of iodine and the formation of iodine derivatives of thyronine, which in turn inhibits the production of hormones in the thyroid gland.
