Tamoxifen is used as an adjuvant drug after breast cancer surgery to reduce the spread of the cancerous tumor in cases of advanced cancer. It also works as a preventative for breast cancer in women who carry risk factors, by binding to estrogen receptors on cancer cells to prevent estrogen from interacting with them. Thus,
tamoxifen reduces its effect on the cells and limits the growth of the cancerous tumor.
