Medicine Description Apixol 0.5%

Apixol eye drops are a medication primarily used to reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), a major factor in the development of glaucoma. These drops contain the active ingredient betaxolol at a concentration of 0.5%. This medication is less likely to cause systemic side effects than some other beta-blockers, making it a safe and effective option for many patients. Maintaining normal intraocular pressure is vital to preventing optic nerve damage and preserving vision.

What are the ingredients in Apixol?

Apixol eye drops contain the following active ingredient:

Betaxolol: 0.5%.

In addition to this active ingredient, the drops contain inactive ingredients to maintain sterility and stability.

Apixol uses

Apixol eye drops are primarily used to treat:

Chronic open-angle glaucoma: to reduce intraocular pressure within the normal range.

Ocular hypertension: to reduce the risk of glaucoma progression. The treatment aims to lower eye pressure to prevent or slow optic nerve damage and preserve the field of vision.

What are the dosages of Apixol?

Apixol eye drops should be used as directed by your doctor. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the patient's response and eye pressure level.

The usual adult dosage is one drop in the affected eye twice daily.

Hands should be washed thoroughly before applying the drops.

After applying the drops, gently close the eye and apply pressure to the inner corner of the eye (tear duct) for one to two minutes to prevent systemic absorption of the medication.

If the patient is using other eye drops, each drop should be administered at least five minutes apart.

The dropper tip should not be touched to any surface, including the eye, to avoid contamination.

What are the side effects of Apixol?

Apixol eye drops may cause some side effects, most of which are local and mild, while some may be systemic or more serious:

Common side effects (local):

A stinging or burning sensation when applying the drops.

Temporary blurred vision.

Dry eyes, itching, or mild redness of the eyes.
