Dantrelax capsules are a medication used as a skeletal muscle relaxant. These capsules contain the active ingredient dantrolene sodium at a concentration of 25 mg. Dantrolene differs from other muscle relaxants in that it acts directly on the skeletal muscle itself, rather than on the central nervous system. It does this by affecting the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum within muscle cells, reducing the muscle's ability to contract excessively. This effect makes it useful in cases of severe and persistent muscle spasms.
What are the ingredients in Dantrelax?
Dantrelax capsules contain the following active ingredient:
Dantrolene sodium: 25 mg.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients.
Indications for use of Dantrelax
Dantrelax capsules are used to treat:
Chronic severe muscle spasticity associated with conditions such as:
Multiple sclerosis.
Spinal cord injuries.
Stroke.
Cerebral palsy.
Malignant hyperthermia: For the prevention and treatment of a rare, life-threatening condition characterized by extremely high body temperature and muscle rigidity.
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: A rare condition that may occur in response to certain psychiatric medications.
Treatment aims to relieve muscle spasms, improve movement, and reduce associated pain.
What is the dosage of Dantrelax?
Dantrelax capsules should be taken as directed by your doctor. The dose is usually started at a low dose and increased very slowly and under close medical supervision due to its potential side effects on the liver. The initial dose may be 25 mg once daily, then gradually increased in 25 mg increments every 4 to 7 days until the effective dose or the maximum recommended dose is reached. The maximum daily dose may be up to 100 mg four times daily.
The capsule should be swallowed whole with water. The medication can be taken with or without food. It is very important to adhere to the prescribed dosage and medical monitoring schedule (especially liver function tests) exactly.
What are the side effects of Dantrelax?
Dantrelax capsules may cause a range of side effects, some of which are common, while others can be serious and require close monitoring:
Liver problems (hepatotoxicity): This may include hepatitis or liver damage. This is the most serious side effect and requires regular monitoring of liver enzymes.
Drowsiness or dizziness.
Muscle weakness.
Diarrhoea or nausea.
General fatigue.
Difficulty swallowing.
Speech problems.
You should inform your doctor immediately if you experience any severe, persistent, or unusual side effects, especially any signs that may indicate liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or pain in the upper right side of the abdomen.
