Streptophenicol treats gastroenteritis and intestinal infections, food poisoning caused by Salmonella, intestinal infections in children, bacillary dysentery caused by Shigella, and is also used as an adjunctive treatment in cases of hepatic coma to prevent ammonia formation from bacteria, and as an adjunctive treatment for urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli microbes. It is used before and after colon and rectal surgeries.
